Signs of a Rodent Infestation

Mice and rats come inside a home or property to build nests. This area serves as their base where they have babies and rest. It needs to provide convenient access to food and water, and will often be in a quiet location where people or pets on the property are not likely to disturb the mice or rats.

This out-of-the-way location often means rodent nests are in attics, wall voids, basements, closets, and other spaces not often visited. Rodents are also nocturnal, so they are most likely to leave their nests at night. Many also forage outside, so they don’t spend long in your property other than to sleep and breed.

Because of this, you may not see a mouse or rat even if there are dozens living inside your home. Instead, you may notice signs that indicate an infestation such as:

• Droppings – Small pellet droppings can collect anywhere that rodents move about.
• Rustling – As they move, their claws will make noises. You may also hear squeaking. Both sounds are more likely to be heard during the evening and nighttime.
• Gnaw Marks – Mice are avid chewers and rats will chew frequently as well. You might notice bite marks in food packaging, walls, plastics, and other articles around your property.
• Grease Stains – Oils on a rodent’s skin and fur will be transferred to surfaces they brush against. The stain will often collect dust, turning it black.
• Flickering Lights – If mice or rats chew the wiring in your home, it may cause lights to flicker or other electrical issues.
• Unpleasant Odor – A build-up of droppings or deceased animals will let off an odor that can spread throughout a property. This is usually a sign of a more extensive or longer-lasting infestation.

Rodents come onto a property through cracks and gaps in exterior walls, foundations, or roofs. Tiny mice can enter a property through a hole the size of a nickel. These holes and cracks often develop as the building ages, and the older buildings in the local area mean that there are potentially several places a rodent could get in unless steps are taken to seal up holes.

Both mice and rats can dangerous. They carry many of the same diseases and cause similar destruction. On the whole, rats tend to be more aggressive towards humans, making them more likely to bite or scratch. Their larger size also corresponds to more intense damage, although chewing damage will be more extensive with mice who are avid chewers.
